This morning, at 11:30 am, new teachers and other Yukon School workers arrived at 10 W. Main after their V.I.P. bus ride. They were greeted with great fanfare: music from the high school band and cheers from the high school cheerleaders.
Out of the estimated 250 people attending the event, about 150 of them were Yukon Public School District new hires. Each new employee was given a “goodie bag” with supplies donated by Chamber members. Twenty-four volunteers filled each one of the bags in only 19 minutes.
The new teacher luncheon is an uncommon practice among cities, and Yukon is proud to be one of the few to properly greet their new members. The event was started 25 years ago by Cherie Logan and Mike Little, a football coach, as a fish fry for his new coaches.
The bowtie pasta with chicken, macaroni and cheese, rolls, and honey butter were provided by Interurban, the drinks by RCB Mortgage, and the dessert cookies were by Sam’s Club.
